It is believed that Gajwel got its Name during Nizam's era and previously known as Gajwelly, at the time of Nizam ruling it was the place for Elephants army (in sankrit Gaja meaning is elephant) , from that it have been called as Gajwelly. There is another story that during the Mahabarath period the pandavas was came to the Gajwel as the part of their vanavasam and stayed at Pandavula cheruvu adjacent to the town, people will show the mark of the Bheema Gadha which is now also visible at the said pond, from the mark of Gadha the Gajwel Name have been arrived.
